DO YOU NEED BUSINESS COACHING?
A few days ago, somebody asked me for advice about business coaching.
I get questions like this all the time, and I usually just say it depends, but I’m tired of people hiding from themselves and blaming the failures of their bullshit businesses on outside factors. So I wrote this reply.
If you’re in the early stages of starting a business, listen up. This might save you a shitload of time, money, and frustration.
The Golden Rule #
We have a rule at my company that we use to guide all major decisions and projects. It’s really simple to understand and implement, and it cuts through a lot of bullshit rationalizing and vacillating.
It goes like this:
Hell yes or fuck no.
Those are the only two answers possible to binary queries. “Should we x?” If we don’t all immediately feel like saying “hell yes,” then we default to the opposite.
Sometimes, we need to do some research or think things through, but under no circumstances should we remain undecided for a period greater than 24 hours. Within that timeframe, somebody should have a solid opinion.
3 Fundamental Questions #
I recommend you really ask yourself what the hell you really want, why you want that, and most importantly, why you don’t already have it.
If you are just considering starting a business it because somebody put the idea in your head, then it’s probably not going to work out.
Answer those three questions ASAP, because any decision you make without knowing those answers will be wrong. Then you return to hell yes or fuck no. It should be extremely simple to decide once you know what you want.
And if you’re still unsure, then default to ‘no’.
Give Up on Bullshit “Hacks” #
Don’t say your big goal is to “build an authority site,” without considering what are can do to become an authority. Knowing what offers are converting and which affiliate networks are good to work with should be the last thing on your mind if you haven’t first tackled the bigger questions of who your audience is and why they would seek you out for advice. Just because “Truth About Abs” sells millions each month doesn’t mean you will make bank by putting up an abs site with some affiliate links.
You can’t work a “system” to beat out established authorities. You simply can’t. It’s impossible.
The way to make a business work is in defining your market and competitive advantage and then focusing on getting people to know/care about you and like/trust you and your business.
Want to be your own boss? Act like it. #
Man up and make decisions about your business (if it’s going to be a real business) and accept that some of them will turn certain people (the wrong people) away.
That shit ain’t on any forum.
The biggest problem for most entrepreneurs is simply this: vision.
If you don’t have a clear vision of what you want to be doing, you’ll never really have a business.
Coaching can help you with a lot of the decisions I’ve talked about, but you can’t outsource vision.
So coaching might help. If you think one can help you, you should work with that person. Coaching can be really valuable, but YOU still have to do the hard work, so I really want to caution you to understand that no amount of coaching can give you a successful business without you first committing to taking responsibility for the vision and decisions in your business.
Because that’s the core or being an entrepreneur.
Don’t think that hiring a coach moves the responsibility for your business off of you and onto the coach. No sane person would ever agree to be responsible for someone else’s business. Not anybody worth a damn.
Figure This Shit Out ASAP #
I’m going to tell you right now that processing what I wrote here won’t be easy or comfortable for you. You should read this two more times right now, think about the questions I’m asking over the course of the day, and then read this two more times tonight.
Looking deep within yourself is the hard work most wannapreneurs are afraid to do, and it’s why their businesses never get off the ground.
If you’re ready to take your business seriously, you’ll want to build it on the strongest possible foundation. That foundation is you, so you better know damn well what you’re made of.
